Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 31, 2026
Makr (“we”, “us”, or “our”) respects your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our website.
Information we collect
We may collect limited technical information automatically supplied by your browser, such as device type, browser type, IP address, and pages visited, when necessary to operate and secure the website.
If you sign up for our newsletter, we also collect your name, email address, and city (see “Newsletter” below).
Your account
If you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password, and the profile details you choose to add: username, photo, city, bio, and a link. Your email address is used to confirm your account and to contact you about it. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider, Google Firebase, and we never see it in readable form.
Your name, username, photo, city, bio, and link are shown on your profile, and the posts, follows, and crew requests you make on Makr are visible to other members as they are in the app. We keep your account until you ask us to delete it.
You can delete your account at any time from Account Settings, or from the account deletion page. When you delete your account, your profile, posts, and meetup history disappear from Makr right away and your login is turned off. We keep your data for 30 days in case you change your mind: if you ask us within that time, we can bring your account back. After 30 days, your account and the data linked to it are deleted automatically. If you want it erased sooner, email privacy@makr.today and we’ll remove it right away. We also keep a minimal activity record (IDs only, never your name or email) so we can show what happened on the platform, for example for safety and legal reasons. It stays after your account is deleted.
When you are logged in, we set a session cookie (makr_session) so the site remembers you for up to five days. It is strictly necessary for the account to work, so it does not depend on the cookie banner, and it is removed when you log out.
Newsletter
If you sign up for the Makr newsletter, we use your name, email address, and city to send you emails about sketch meetups near you. We only do this if you ask for it: you can sign up with the newsletter form on this website, or by ticking the box when you create an account. Creating an account does not sign you up by itself.
We use Klaviyo, an email service provider, to store your subscription and send the emails, so we share your name, email address, and city with them for that purpose. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any newsletter email, from Account settings on this website if you have an account, or by emailing privacy@makr.today. When you unsubscribe, we stop sending. We keep a record that you unsubscribed so we do not email you again.
How we use your information
We use this information to operate and secure the website, respond to your requests, and understand how the site is used. We do not sell your personal information.
To show you events near you, we use your IP address to estimate your approximate location (city level). We look it up on our own server and do not store it or share it with anyone.
This product includes GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind, available from https://www.maxmind.com.
City suggestions in the search box come from GeoNames data (geonames.org), licensed under CC BY 4.0. They are matched on our own server, so what you type in that box is not sent to anyone else.
Cookies and analytics
We use the Meta Pixel, a tool provided by Meta Platforms, to measure interest in Makr and to make our advertising more relevant. When enabled, it sets cookies (such as _fbp) in your browser and shares limited information with Meta, including pages you visit on this site and your IP address. Meta may combine this with data it already holds and use it for its own purposes, including ad targeting and measurement.
We also use Microsoft Clarity, a usage analytics tool provided by Microsoft, to understand how people use this site. Clarity may collect information about your interactions, such as clicks, scrolling, and pages visited, and may include session recordings.
The Meta Pixel and Microsoft Clarity are off by default. They only run after you choose “Allow” in the cookie banner shown on your first visit, and nothing is sent to Meta or Microsoft unless you do. If you choose “No thanks,” neither loads. You can change your choice at any time by clearing this site’s cookies and site data in your browser, which brings the banner back on your next visit. Blocking third-party cookies in your browser also prevents the pixel from working.
Legal basis
Where applicable, we process your information based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time as described above, or on our legitimate interest in operating and securing the website. We send the newsletter only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
How long we keep information
We keep information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy or to meet legal and operational obligations. We keep your newsletter details until you unsubscribe.
Sharing and service providers
We may use trusted providers to host this website and to run accounts (Google Firebase, for sign-in, database, and photo storage) and to send the newsletter (Klaviyo, for the emails you ask us to send). They may process personal information only on our instructions and to provide their services. If you allow the Meta Pixel or Microsoft Clarity (see “Cookies and analytics” above), Meta Platforms and Microsoft also act as recipients of the limited data described there. Meta uses pixel data as an independent controller for its own advertising purposes. Some of our providers are based in the United States or process data there. We may also disclose information where required by law or to protect the safety, rights, or property of makr. and others.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. To make a request, contact us using the details below. You may also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information. No internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure.
Children
Makr is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and change the “Last updated” date.
